When we asked Coach Q about how he got into coaching, he revealed that it was a total accident. He was in graduate school and needed an internship to finish his master's degree. He ended up at Newport school in Maryland, where he met Chris Cheney and Keith Stevens. They convinced him to give coaching a try, and he initially saw it as a means to an end.


However, as he started coaching and working with talented players like Demar Johnson, Angel Rivera, and Damian Wilkins, he fell in love with the game. Despite his initial reluctance, he took on the role of coaching the girls' team and found success, winning 20-plus games and earning Coach of the Year honors for the county. This experience sparked his passion for coaching and set him on a path of dedication to the sport.


The Influence of Boxing on Coaching Style


Coach Q's background in boxing played a significant role in shaping his coaching style. He emphasized the importance of toughness, accountability, and a competitive mindset in his players. Drawing on his own experiences in the ring, he understood the value of hard work and disciplined training.


He believed that coaching and boxing required a similar mindset, where one mistake could have serious consequences. Coach Q sought out players who would make a daily commitment to improvement and approach the game with a relentless drive to be the best. When asked about any regrets he had in coaching, Coach Q mentioned a few players who he felt he could have helped reach their full potential. He mentioned Fantasia Goodwin, Shea Taft, and Tasha Harris, players who had tremendous talent but may not have reached their desired level of success.


Coach Q acknowledged that coaching involves timing and opportunity, and sometimes certain circumstances prevent players from achieving their goals. Nevertheless, he expressed a desire to have had more time with these players and to have seen them fulfill their potential.
